IH Summary Expanded to Include Diagnostic Criteria

It’s often a struggle to describe to others – sometimes even to healthcare providers – the essence of idiopathic hypersomnia.

To address this, HF prepared Idiopathic Hypersomnia Standard Characteristics in 2017 and made it available on our website for both healthcare providers and people with IH. This one-page document, reviewed and approved by our prestigious Medical Advisory Board, summarizes the common characteristics of IH.

Now, we’ve expanded that original document to include a second page, which provides the complete diagnostic criteria for IH according to the ICSD-3 (International Classification of Sleep Disorders, 3rd Edition) and for hypersomnolence disorder according to the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – the diagnostic manual used by psychiatrists and therapists). We hope this comprehensive document will continue to be helpful to the IH community – to read and to share with friends, family members, healthcare providers, and others.
