Hypersomnia Foundation Documentary PSAs

The Hypersomnia Foundation in collaboration with PODHEAD STUDIOS set out to raise critical awareness for people with idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) and other hypersomnias. We made a series of short films to help people understand how we manage everyday tasks, every day.

Caught In This Riptide

A mini-documentary about living with idiopathic hypersomnia

Beth Boyce lives with idiopathic hypersonia, a rare, debilitating sleep disorder that’s broadly misunderstood. In Hood River, Oregon, where Beth gets by, it can often feel like both an accommodating sanctuary and a pit of fog she can’t escape.

Hey Sleepyhead

Sleep disorders affect 1 in 5 people. For those without a diagnosis, this can lead to a lot of misunderstanding. Maybe you aren’t just sleepy?

Hey Sleepyhead was produced in conjunction with Idiopathic Hypersomnia Day.

The Spoon Project

We want to take a moment to reflect on how sleepiness in idiopathic hypersomina is different –it is not the same as regular tiredness or exhaustion. It’s worse than jetlag, worse than navigating nightshift, and harder than having heavy fatigue or chronic low energy.

People with IH are #BeyondSleepy.

Excessive daytime sleepiness is difficult to explain. But one way that is known to help people understand how we deal with managing everyday tasks while being beyond sleepy is the Spoon Theory.

The great thing about the Spoon Theory is that it acknowledges all other chronic diseases—how those living with disabling illnesses get fewer spoons to navigate their mental and physical energy.

If this resonates with you, or someone you love, please share it with your friends and communities. Together, we can better understand those with IH and all those living with chronic diseases. Together we can raise awareness and provide meaningful programs and support to all members of our community.
