WHAT IS A PROCLAMATION?

A proclamation is a document noting an official designation at the local, state, or federal government level which helps raise awareness for an issue. The Hypersomnia Foundation is launching the inaugural Idiopathic Hypersomnia Day (This is IH Day) on June 1, 2024 and we need your help requesting proclamations from your city, county, or state.

When and how should I request a proclamation?

Depending on the location and legislative body type, proclamations are typically issued by a governor, mayor, or legislature.
It can take awhile to go through the process of requesting and receiving a proclamation, so we suggest reaching out to your local or state government beginning April 1, 2024.
Work with your point person from the Hypersomnia Foundation to determine the process in your location and follow the steps provided to make a request. Don’t have a point person yet? Email and specialists will help you navigate this process.

As you email your representative, copy the Hypersomnia Foundation at .
If possible, include information about your unique story and how hypersomnia has impacted you.
Include a copy of the draft proclamation attached to this email with your request.
If you have difficulty receiving a response, please feel free to politely follow up every couple of weeks. Most places receive many requests for proclamations in addition to the other responsibilities they work on each day.

What happens when I receive the proclamation?

A hard copy of the proclamation can usually be picked up or mailed to you. In some cases there might be an opportunity for it to be presented in a more formal setting.

Consider reaching out to your local media (TV, newspapers, etc.) to let them know about the Proclamation and how important it is to raise awareness of Idiopathic Hypersomnia.

Promote the Proclamation and share any news stories covering IH Day on social media.

Please work with your point person from the Hypersomnia Foundation if you need support or have questions about having the proclamation presented to you, if you’d like to contact the media, or if you need additional help drafting social media posts.
