THIS 2016 GIVING SEASON
HELP US GET #BEYONDSLEEPY
An insatiable need to sleep that is not eased by a full night’s slumber is one of the debilitating effects of a rare, chronic neurological disorder called idiopathic hypersomnia (IH).
IH causes “sleep inertia”, which makes the transition from sleep to waking extremely difficult. Sleep leaves a mental fogginess, sometimes called sleep drunkenness, which can remain throughout the few hours that people with IH can remain awake. Thinking clearly and carrying out even basic physical tasks can be difficult. Many people with the disorder sleep up to 11 hours out of 24. The disorder is chronic and the symptoms are relentless, making it extremely difficult for people with IH to hold down jobs, remain in school, maintain marriages and fully engage with their family and friends.
Raise awareness by taking the PJs & Pillows Challenge.
HOW CAN I HELP ?
THERE ARE TWO WAYS !
Support research by donating to restricted funds.
The Hypersomnia Foundation, Inc. strives to improve the lives of people with idiopathic hypersomnia and related disorders by advocating on their behalf, providing support, educating the public and healthcare professionals, raising awareness, and funding research into effective treatments, better diagnostic tools, and, ultimately, a cure for these debilitating conditions
Put on your favorite G-rated pajamas, grab your favorite pillow, and snap a photo of yourself holding a “Let’s Get #beyondsleepy” sign. You can make your own or use the one we've created for you! Be as creative as possible in choosing your location, but stay safe. (No hanging off of cliffs!)
We don’t know how many people have IH. This number is vital for scientists to apply for grants and encourage pharmaceutical companies to study IH.
We don’t have a biomarker, a substance in the body, such as blood or spinal fluid that can tell us whether or not a person has IH.
The tests that we do have are often inaccurate and repeating them is very expensive.
There is no FDA approved treatment; although wakefulness-promoting medications are sometimes prescribed, "off-label". Unfortunately, these medications don’t work well for everyone, and they may stop working over time and/or have bothersome side effects.

Donate to the Hypersomnia Foundation's unrestricted fund to support Awareness and Education programs, or support research into IH by donating $25 to the Hypersomnia Foundation’s dedicated fund that can only be used for research grants. If $25 is more than you can afford right now, please realize that no amount is too small. Of course, we will gladly accept amounts larger than $25 as well.
GRAB YOUR PJS & SNAP A PIC
Take the “Let’s Get #beyondsleepy” PJs & Pillows Challenge and then pass it along to increase awareness and raise funds for research! Keep it going through the entire giving season!
A two-pronged approach is necessary to combat Idiopathic Hypersomnia. This giving season, the Hypersomnia Foundation has developed the PJs and Pillows Challenge to raise awareness of the symptoms of IH and to raise funds designated solely for research into the cause of and treatments for IH. You can help!
Share your photo on social media, include the #beyondsleepy hashtag in your post, set it to public, then tag a family member or friend to take the challenge next! (It works best if you challenge other to respond within 72 hours!) If you'd rather send an email we've created a letter you can use to edit and make it more personal!
Only through research will improved understanding, accurate diagnostic tests, and effective treatments become a reality.
The Hypersomnia Foundation gladly accepts donations via check. Please make all checks payable to the Hypersomnia Foundation and mail to:
